Tips To Protect Your Home From Burglars

No one wants to have their house broken into. If it happens to you, it leaves you with such a sense of violation and fear. There are many tips that you can follow to help prevent you from becoming another victim of someone else’s greed.

The first thing you can do is install a monitored security alarm in your home. This has been proven to be the best and most effective way to keep thieves out. To make it even more effective, make sure your alarms can easily be seen from the street, they make loud noises, and they are linked to your security service. This security service should monitor your alarm and respond when it is activated.

Every time you leave or go to bed, make a conscious effort to get into the habit of locking up. After awhile, this will become second nature to you to lock your windows and doors. Fit keyed locks to all of your windows, no matter how high up they are or how small they seem. Also, you should put double-keyed deadlocks on your external doors. The safest door to purchase for your exterior doors is a solid wood door. By having a deadlock, you are making a potential burglar leave the same way they came in. Not only that, it also makes it harder for them to steal big items like televisions.

Sliding doors are a common weak spot. If you have them, consider putting patio bolts on them. Install a peephole in your front door and install a screen door with a lock on it. This will put an extra barrier between you and anyone who approaches your front door.

Never leave a spare key outside. A smart burglar knows all of the possible hiding places. Leave your extra keys with a friend or family member instead. If a burglar can, they will steal your car, so keep your car keys in a safe, secure, hiding place.

If you have side gate entrances to your back yard, keep them locked. If you don’t, then you are giving a thief easy access to the back of your house. Keep your garden shed and garage locked. You should also always lock the doors that are between your house and your garage. Another good tip to protect your home from burglars is to install motion-activated sensor lights. One movement and they will come on, lighting up your whole lawn. Also keep your trees and shrubs trimmed. You don’t want to give them a good place to hide.

If you are going away on vacation, don’t advertise it. Try to keep your home looking as lived in as you possibly can. Keep a list of all of your valuable possessions on hand. If you ever happened to be burgled, this list can help you identify what may be missing. Lastly, make sure your homeowner’s insurance is kept up to date.
